This comedy features the incorrigible romantic Pasquale, who touchingly loves his young wife. He suffers quite a number of misfortunes. The difficulty of getting a job, and being in a succession of cheap lodgings. Finally he manages to rent a huge ancient house – and absolutely free of charge at that!
The house suffers from a bad reputation. They say that years ago its owner, the grandee, caught his wife with a lover and ordered that they be bricked up alive in the house. Pasquale has to shatter the myth about ghosts inhabiting the house. To do that he should, for instance, appear on every of 68 (!) balconies in the morning and in the evening, beat a carpet, sing songs, or at least laugh loudly to show the neighbors that the residents are happy.
Therefore, Pasquale is not at all surprised when he sees an unknown young man in the house, moreover he is only glad to accept big sums of money that somehow find their way into the pocket of his jacket.
So as not to frighten his young wife with stories about the ghosts Pasquale did not tell her about the happenings that have taken place since they have moved into the house.
The reality that strikes, when the cuckolded husband takes her lover for a ghost, creates a cascade of really funny and touching situations. The characters of this famous work by the eminent Italian comedy playwright Eduardo de Filippo look anew not only at their family and friends but at themselves as well. Human relations become ghostly when lies filter between close people, when genuine love is ruined under the burden of ambiguity and compromise.
