Theatres have always been glad to turn to the story about the adventurer Krechinsky looking for a wealthy wife. However, not a charming rascal Krechinsky was the focus of the producers’ attention, but often his fellow Rasplyuev. “If Rasplyuev were a mere villain, he wouldn’t be worth mentioning; but the author could successfully and unexpectedly combine in him an out-and-out scoundrel with a touch of simple-mindedness and naivety, which unintentionally draw viewers’ attention to him” – magazines said in the year of the premiere. The actors playing Raspluyev always presented meanness and cheating combined with ingenuousness and naughtiness in his character. They had it in them to see Human in everyone, even in a paltry person. Sukhovo-Kobylin was among the first who realized the depths hidden in “humble folk”, the favourite character of Russian literature.
The work of Sukhovo-Kobylin, as it is generally known, demands toughness, energy and elegance from the director and actors. Mikhail Razumovsky embodies exactly the same image in Krechinsky. He is handsome, stately, light, aristocratic. This part fitted the actor as a glove. For playing Krechinsky in 2004 the actor was presented with the Saint Petersburg Highest Theatrical Award “Golden Lights” in the nomination “Best male role”.
