The play by a brilliant dramatist, the author of unfading novels, and a witty storyteller N.V. Gogol, “The Gamblers” takes place of honor among the most famous and sought after works of Russian literature. The theme of gambling and cardsharping touched upon by N. Gogol remains inconceivably topical even today. Russian literary men who recognized passion for gambling as “the strongest of all passions” considered it to be a goldmine of plots.
Although the epigraph at the beginning of “The Gamblers” says: “A tale that was told”, every person living today even if he/she has never visited the casino and has never sat down to a card table, will agree that this theme is still vital. For “The Gamblers” is a story about whims of destiny, about passion, about addiction to gambling that may once subdue the whole life. It is also about Russia that the protagonist, Ikharev, calls hastily “a swindling land”.
A detective plot of the play will carry away even a sophisticated lover of brain-twisters. High-level cardsharpers meet in a provincial inn. They join their efforts in order to hit the jackpot, beating a local landowner by means of packed cards. No one knows who will break the bank and become a lucky man. As the game of chance is a perfidious thing: you are lucky today and may gamble everything away tomorrow.
The protagonist Ikharev unlike his pals is not a mere adventurer and swindler, he’s a possessed one, a genius. Gambling means poetry for him, and it’s not without reason that the object of his cordial feelings is Adelaida Ivanovna – a magical pack of playing cards, a symbol of his happiness and good fortune. But we realize that every bullet has its billet. Gogol’s comedy has everything to become a successful performance: a fascinating intrigue, sparkling humor, an absorbing storyline, and skillful and perfected dialogs.
According to the press: “Tatiana Kazakova managed to stage an unexpectedly lyric performance. And although it has an ironical, at times even sarcastic ring, the director compassionates and sympathizes with young swindlers. They eventually lost themselves, as their souls were at stake, though the gambles because of their young age didn’t realize that yet”.
Audience will be definitely glad to see the team of young actors, who openly enjoy classical language, create harmonious partnership, and contagiously communicate an atmosphere of a tense card game.
